Whether we realize it or not, all of us have been blessed by the values of religious liberty. Our church’s Liberty magazine has been a beacon of those values, sent to many government officials, judges, attorneys and civic leaders. Religious liberty is a tenuous gift—dependent on our country’s Constitution and those who interpret it.
The first General Conference session for the Adventist Church was held in 1863. Twenty delegates, all men, representing five conferences from the Northeast and Midwest, met for for just three days — and then kicked off an evangelistic campaign. Today, with 18 million members around the globe, the logistics of steering the work of the church is far more complex.
